Msgr. Thomas Pai was the keynote speaker in Kaohsiung, at a national meeting of forty workers. His talk was on the subject of the dignity of labor and the fact that one-third of the average worker's life is spent in factories; the importance, therefore, of setting a good pattern of life as agents of change in the industrialized society of Taiwan. The National Team of Young Christian Workers planned this event for the training of laborers. There are presently nine centers for workers in Taiwan, representing full-time personnel from missionary societies, as follows. Cursillos-in-Christianity welcomed forty-nine new members to the Cursillo Movement in Taiwan, bringing up the number of these fervent Cursillistas to more than four thousand. There have already been a total of sixty-one Cursillos-in-Christianity, conducted for men, and forty-two, for women - throughout Church centers, since the inception of the movement in Taiwan.

The ninth 2-3 year training program for Lay Volunteer Apostles was opened in Hualien City. Other cities that have had this training program are: Keelung, Taipei, Taoyuan, Chungli, Hsinchu, Miaoli and Kaohsiung. Some five hundred Volunteer Lay Apostles are presently in training. In preparation for 1986 are groups in Taitung City and several towns and cities of the Hsinchu area. The movement is spreading to Hong Kong and Japan - the aim being: "Each Christian, An Apostle'.

The fourth session of weekly Christian enrichment lectures was officially opened at the Chancery lecture hall in Taipei, attended by a steady group of over one hundred adult Christians seeking to learn their faith more deeply in order to spread it to others. The same training courses are also given in the Lotung area. Each session lasts four months. Previous sessions dealt with Basic Church Doctrines, Liturgy and Scripture. The fourth session deals with the Social Doctrines of the Church.

Bishop Joseph Ti-Kang of Chiayi took possession of his new office as Coadjutor Archbishop of Taipei, with right of succession, during a ceremony at the Archbishop's House, at which time the Apostolic Letter of appointment was presented to him in the conference hall. The Missionary of Charity and winner in 1979 of the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, came to Taiwan for a three-day visit. The wide recognition at all levels of our local society of Mother Teresa's great contributions to humanity, redounded to the good of the Catholic Church in Taiwan. At the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior, on January 17, Mother Teresa was presented by Minister Wu Pai-Shung with the First Class Social Service Medal. President Chiang Ching-Kuo received her for a personal encounter in the afternoon of the same day. Mother Teresa addressed all kinds of church and civic groups, in private and public places, from Taipei to Kaohsiung, sharing her personal ideals and experiences, and teaching the value of human life, the need of spreading love in order to attain peace in the world.

The oldest church in South Taiwan, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica in a solemn ceremony held in the small town of Wanching Chuan,in virtue of a decree issued by Pope John Paul II on July 24, 1984. The new basilica will henceforth be a national sanctuary for the Veneration of the Immaculate Virgin in Taiwan.

The Episcopal Commission for Evangelization in Taiwan met at the Center of Spirituality in Changhua, under the leadership of Bishop Paul Shan, chairman of the Commission. Five bishops, twenty-seven priests, eighteen religious sisters, two lay women and several devoted organizers - in all, fifty-seven persons were present, most of whom being members of the commission. The chief outcome of this meeting was agreed to be the imperative of becoming a local church, emerging from below, from the grassroots. This would be fostered by Bible Study Groups, that hopefully will result into Basic Christian Communities.

The first FABC Bishops Institute for Lay Apostolate (BILA I) was held in Changhua at Manresa House, under the chairmanship of Bishop Joseph Ti-Kang. Nine days of living together brought priests, religious and lay leaders in close rapport with sixteen bishops - from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Models of lay participation and training were presented; a day's exposure brought the participants to the mountain parish of Tili to experience the fruits of lay training programs. Fr, Frinz Lobinger, a guest speaker from South Africa, gave an important presentation on the subject of Basic Ecclesial Communities.

Bishop Joseph Y. Wang and Fr. Andrew Chao attended the meeting in Rome of all presidents and secretaries of Episcopal Commissions on Liturgy. The meeting was held in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Vatican II Constitution on Sacred Liturgy and consisted in surveying national liturgical renewal programs over that period of time.

An Ad Hoc Commission was formed to promote the cause of canonization of the Blessed Chinese Martyrs. Archbishop Joseph Cheng of Kaohsiung was appointed postulator; the vice-president being Msgr. Joseph Wang, Chinese Church representative, residing in Rome. Other members of the Commission were priests from the religious communities of Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans and Vincentians. The pastor of the Chinese Martyrs Church in Panchiao is also a member of the Commission. Msgr. Stanislaus Chang of Hsinchu was elected secretary of the Commission.

Eight members of the Chinese Interfaith Friendship Association (two each from the Catholic, Protestant, Muslim and Buddhist religions) left Taipei for a goodwill tour of important Church centers in Thailand, India, United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Singapore. The eight religious leaders returned on August 26th. The Chinese Interfaith Friendship Association was founded in Chungking, forty years ago, by the late Cardinal Paul Yupin.

A Caritas-Taiwan, ROC report, covering six years (1977-1983) shows that through our Caritas staff, a total of 1,683 "small boat" refugees from Vietnam were processed for resettlement in countries abroad, as follows: United States of America, 1,641; Australia, 3; Belgium, 9; Canada, 9; France, 1; Norway, 6; Philippines 1; Taiwan, 57; West Germany, 13. In addition, 6l Vietnamese refugees on board a Norwegian ship and 70 others on a Dutch ship, which docked in Kaohsiung and Keelung respectively, were also processed for resettlement. A group of 23 ethnic Chinese from Cambodia were airlifted from a Thai refugee camp and brought to Taiwan for resettlement.

The Catholic Church in Taiwan, having issued several statements against the legalization of abortion in the country, was well-represented at a hearing granted by the Legislative Yuan. The subject discussed was treated under five headings: law, culture, morality, social customs and woman's health. Experts, religious leaders and sociologists freely expressed their views, respectfully heard by the members of the Legislative Yuan.

The Third Bishops Institute for Missionary, Apostolate (BIMA III) was held in Taiwan at Manresa House in Changhua. The 59 participants included 26 Bishops from China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macao, Malaysia, and Philippines. There were also ten resource experts among whom were theologians, missiologists and one facilitator in group dynamics, who came from the FABC Region, Rome and New York. Many phases of the apostolate were treated in an atmosphere of prayer, chiefly: Proclamation, Dialogue, the Role of the Laity and the Role of the Christian Family.

The Cardinal's coffin arrived from Rome. A funeral Mass was celebrated in the Cathedral on the 28th, the coffin being covered with the national flag. The remains of Cardinal Yupin are being kept on the campus of Fu Jen Catholic University.

The Eucharist was celebrated in commemoration of the late Cardinal. The entire episcopate were present, with 120 priests concelebrating at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in a very solemn manner. High-ranking government officials attended; the President and the Vice-President personally participated in the offering of the flowers during the Holy Sacrifice.

Cardinal Yupin left for Rome to attend both the funeral of Pope Paul VI and the conclave for the election of a new Pope. Seven days later, on August 16th, word was received that Cardinal Yupin himself had gone to a better world at 13:00 p.m.

The Chinese Bishops Conference submitted a study-consultation paper to the leading KMT Party Congress of Delegates dealing with education matters in Catholic schools. The initiative was well accepted, and as a result, the teaching of Catholic doctrine in Catholic schools was approved.

The 50th anniversary of the Consecration of the first Chinese Bishops, the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese Hierarchy and the 100th anniversary of the late Cardinal Celso Costantini, first Apostolic Delegate to China, were jointly celebrated in one great commemoration event linked with a solemn Eucharistic Congress, held at the auditorium of Fu Jen University. Participants in great numbers came from all parts of Taiwan, making this extraordinary event a memorable one in the Church of China.
